In a significant pre-emptive strike against crime, the Nagpur police have externed seven notorious individuals from the city's limits. This decisive action aims to bolster public safety and confidence ahead of the crucial Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections.
Who Are the Externed Offenders?
The police identified the seven habitual offenders as Kalpana Meshram (54), Tapan Hazare (48), Pawan Khapekar (32), Nashik Kanekar (38), Ranjana Borkar (41), Vijay Channe (45), and Mangal Srivastava (26). These individuals hail from various localities including Swagat Nagar, Jai Ambe Nagar, and Hanuman Nagar, among others.
Investigations revealed their deep involvement in a spectrum of serious criminal activities. Their alleged crimes ranged from assaulting residents and issuing death threats to operating illegal liquor dens that sold country-made alcohol. Despite previous preventive measures, they showed no signs of reforming their ways, compelling authorities to take stricter action.
The Legal Crackdown and Its Scope
The externment orders were formally issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-5) Niketan B Kadam. The operation was carried out under the guidance of Assistant Commissioner of Police Rohit Oval, with crucial support from senior police inspectors Sunil Kakade of Pardi police station and Harish Kumar Borade of Wathoda police station.
The orders, served on December 31, prohibit these individuals from entering the jurisdictions of Nagpur city, Nagpur rural, as well as the Mauda and Kuhi police stations. The duration of externment varies: three history-sheeters have been externed for three months, two for one year, and one for a period of two years.
A Move for Electoral Peace and Public Confidence
This crackdown is not an isolated law and order exercise. It is strategically timed to ensure a peaceful environment in the run-up to the NMC elections. By removing these persistent threats from Pardi and Wathoda areas, the police aim to prevent any intimidation of voters or disruption of the democratic process.
