Ahead of the crucial civic body elections scheduled for January 15, the Nagpur police have launched a major crackdown on criminal activities across the city. The intensified drive has led to significant seizures of illegal weapons and the busting of illicit liquor manufacturing units, aiming to ensure a peaceful polling environment.
Weapons Seized from NMC Sanitation Worker
In a targeted combing operation on Monday, a police team from Pachpaoli police station acted on specific intelligence. The operation, conducted under the supervision of Senior Inspector Baburao Raut and Zonal DCP Rahul Madane, led to a search at the residence of Kamlesh Tambe (42), a contractual sanitation worker with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
The search, conducted in the Bapu Kutir Nagar area near the railway track, proved fruitful. Officials recovered five swords and one knife from Tambe's possession. Following the discovery, Tambe was detained immediately.
A formal case has been registered against him under the relevant sections of the Arms Act. Police sources revealed that Tambe's late brother had a criminal record. During interrogation, Tambe claimed the confiscated weapons belonged to his deceased brother.
Simultaneous Raids on Illicit Liquor Trade
In a separate but parallel action, the police carried out three simultaneous raids targeting the illegal production and sale of country-made liquor. These raids were concentrated in Prabhag 21 of the Satranjipura Zone.
Acting on a tip-off, police teams stormed the illicit units. The operations resulted in the seizure of large quantities of ready illicit liquor, raw materials, and distillation equipment. Multiple suspects involved in the illegal trade were apprehended on the spot.
Preliminary estimates suggest the total value of the confiscated stock runs into several lakhs of rupees. This decisive action aims to curb the flow of illegal alcohol, which is often linked to disturbances during election periods.
Pre-Election Security Drive in Full Swing
Police officials emphasized that such proactive seizures are critical for maintaining law and order. The focus is on preventing the potential misuse of prohibited weapons and intoxicants that could disrupt the electoral process. "Such seizures are crucial to preventing potential misuse of prohibited weapons, particularly during the polling period," stated an official.
This recent crackdown is part of a sustained effort. Just a few days prior to these incidents, the Ajni police had seized a firearm from Prabhag 33 of the Dhantoli zone, indicating a city-wide sweep. The Nagpur police have signaled their commitment to continuing these rigorous checks until the completion of the civic elections to ensure a free and fair voting process for all citizens.
