Nagpur Police Swiftly Arrest Teenager in ATM Fraud Case
In a swift operation, the MIDC police in Nagpur have apprehended a 19-year-old youth for attempting to defraud bank customers by using an iron strip to trap cash in ATM machines. The accused, identified as Pranay Wankhede, a resident of Ajni in Nagpur, was caught along with a juvenile accomplice, highlighting a concerning trend of youth involvement in financial crimes.
Incident Unfolds at Hingna Road ATM
The crime was discovered on Wednesday at an ATM located on Hingna Road near Wadi T-Point, within the jurisdiction of the MIDC police station. A customer, Jitendra Bhagat, visited the machine to withdraw Rs7,000 but encountered an unusual sound, and the cash became stuck during the transaction. Alerted by the issue, Bhagat immediately notified the bank's manager, Prakash Bhoyar, who was conducting an inspection at the ATM at that very moment.
Upon investigation, Bhoyar found an iron strip deliberately inserted into the cash-dispensing slot, which had trapped the banknotes. The manager successfully retrieved the stuck money and handed it over to Bhagat, preventing any financial loss to the customer. This prompt action by the bank staff played a crucial role in exposing the fraudulent scheme.
CCTV Footage Leads to Rapid Police Action
Reviewing the CCTV footage from the ATM, authorities identified two individuals inserting the iron strip into the machine. Based on this evidence, Bhoyar filed a formal complaint with the MIDC police station. Under the directions of senior inspector Gokul Mahajan, the detection branch (DB) launched an intensive search operation to locate the suspects.
The police circulated photos from the CCTV footage among informants and across police networks, leading to a breakthrough. Within 24 hours, two persons matching the description were spotted roaming in the Bhagwan Nagar area under the Ajni police station limits. The police swiftly apprehended the duo, demonstrating efficient coordination and rapid response in tackling the crime.
Confession and Legal Proceedings
During interrogation, Pranay Wankhede confessed to the crime, admitting his role in the ATM fraud attempt. He was subsequently produced before the Hingna Court, which remanded him in one-day police custody for further investigation. The juvenile accomplice is being handled separately under relevant legal provisions for minors in conflict with the law.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the innovative methods criminals employ to exploit ATM systems and the importance of vigilance among both bank customers and staff.
