Nanded Police Crack Major Burglary Ring with Social Media Aid
In a significant breakthrough, the Nanded police have successfully solved 10 house break-in cases, recovering stolen property valued at Rs 78.35 lakh and arresting five members of a criminal gang. The investigation was notably propelled by CCTV footage that went viral on social media, providing crucial leads to law enforcement.
Viral CCTV Footage Sparks Investigation
The case gained momentum after CCTV footage from a burglary in Nanded's Pharande Nagar area began circulating widely on social media platforms. The footage, which showed three suspects involved in the crime, was uploaded by a member of the affected family nearly a month ago and quickly went viral. Following this, a formal complaint was lodged with the police, prompting immediate action.
Superintendent of Police Abinash Kumar took cognisance of the footage and directed police teams to scour the internet and social media for leads. "Social media can act as a force multiplier in investigations when used constructively," SP Kumar stated. "In this case, circulating CCTV footage played a key role in identifying and tracking the accused, enabling us to solve multiple cases simultaneously."
Technical Surveillance and Arrests
The Bhagyanagar police launched a focused investigation, leveraging CCTV footage and technical surveillance. Inspector Santosh Tambe, along with the detection branch team led by Sub-Inspector Vinod Deshmukh, meticulously analysed multiple CCTV clips from the crime scene and other locations linked to similar offences across the city. The team also examined dump data and call detail records (CDR) to track the suspects' movements.
Based on technical evidence and other inputs, the police first tracked down three suspects last week from the Bavanagar area, including a minor. During interrogation, they confessed to committing multiple house break-ins and revealed that the stolen valuables had been sold. Subsequently, the police arrested the remaining accused, identified as:
- Sohail Abdul Sattar (19)
- Pradipkumar Virendraprasad Kori (19)
- Arjun Purushottam More (28)
- Sheikh Naim Sheikh Mainuddin (22)
- Asha Harichandra Telang (56)
Recovery of Stolen Property and Ongoing Probe
The gang was found to be involved in at least 10 house break-in cases registered at the Bhagyanagar, Shivajinagar, and Airport police stations. Police recovered a substantial haul of stolen items, including:
- 445g of gold ornaments worth Rs 68.80 lakh
- 1,714g of silver ornaments worth Rs 4.54 lakh
- A car, three motorcycles, and other items totaling Rs 5 lakh
Further investigation is being carried out by Sub-Inspector Vinod Deshmukh to uncover any additional links or crimes. This case highlights the growing role of digital tools and public engagement in modern policing efforts.
