Nashik Grapples with Chain Robbery Surge
Chain robberies continue to plague Nashik, with another distressing incident reported on Saturday night. This latest case adds to a growing pattern of thefts that has residents on edge.
Elderly Woman Targeted Near Saibaba Temple
A 71-year-old woman became the latest victim in the Indiranagar area. She was standing at an autorickshaw stand near the Saibaba temple around 8:30 PM when two men on a motorcycle approached her.
The pillion rider swiftly snatched her gold chain, valued at approximately Rs 40,000. The duo then fled towards the Pathardi area, leaving the woman shaken but physically unharmed.
Recent Cases Highlight Alarming Trend
This incident follows two similar robberies reported on January 15. In those cases, one woman lost a gold chain worth Rs 75,000, while another was robbed of a chain valued at Rs 40,000.
Chain robberies have become a persistent menace in Nashik. Police data shows one or two cases are registered every week, creating a sense of insecurity among citizens.
Statistical Overview of the Problem
Last year witnessed a total of 140 chain robbery cases in the city. This translates to more than 11 incidents per month on average.
Until January 17 this year, authorities have already registered 10 cases across key areas including Indiranagar, Mhasrul, and Mumbai Naka.
Police Response and Recent Breakthrough
A senior police officer acknowledged the ongoing challenge while speaking to reporters. The officer emphasized that police are making sincere efforts to investigate all reported cases thoroughly.
In a recent development, Nashik police achieved a significant breakthrough. They arrested a 33-year-old chain snatcher from Kalyan in Thane district last week.
This arrest led to the detection of 22 chain robbery cases that were registered in the city last year. Police also recovered a stolen motorcycle and an SUV from the suspect.
Community Concerns and Safety Measures
Residents express growing concern about the frequency of these incidents. Many are calling for increased police patrols in vulnerable areas, particularly during evening hours.
Police advise citizens to remain vigilant in crowded places and avoid displaying valuable jewelry in public spaces. They encourage immediate reporting of any suspicious activities to help prevent further crimes.
The pattern of chain robberies in Nashik demonstrates an urgent need for enhanced security measures. While police have made some arrests, the continuing incidents suggest more comprehensive strategies may be necessary to address this criminal trend effectively.
