The National Lok Adalat, held at the Meghalaya High Court in Shillong and across all districts of the state, successfully settled 183 cases on Saturday, amounting to a total of Rs 1,34,86,214. The event was organized by the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA).
Presiding Officers and Oversight
The hearings were presided over by High Court Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere, who also serves as the patron-in-chief of MSLSA. Justice HS Thangkhiew, the executive chairman of MSLSA, supervised the proceedings, while Justice W Diengdoh, chairperson of the high court legal services committee, was also present during the event.
Cases Taken Up and Settled
According to E Kharumnuid, member secretary of MSLSA, a total of 625 cases were taken up for settlement during the National Lok Adalat. This included 242 pre-litigation cases and 383 pending cases. Out of these, 183 cases were resolved, with a total settlement amount of Rs 1,34,86,214. The successful resolution of these cases highlights the effectiveness of the Lok Adalat mechanism in providing speedy and amicable dispute resolution.
The National Lok Adalat is a significant initiative aimed at reducing the burden on courts and promoting alternative dispute resolution. The Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority continues to play a pivotal role in organizing such events to ensure access to justice for all citizens.
