In a significant development, authorities have detected a new case of alleged illegal opium cultivation in Chhattisgarh, specifically in the Balrampur district. This discovery comes just days after a major poppy cultivation case was unearthed in the Durg region, highlighting ongoing concerns about narcotics activities in the state.
Details of the Illegal Cultivation Operation
Officials confirmed that the illegal opium cultivation was identified at Tripuri village within the Kusmi region. The illicit crop was found spread across approximately two to five acres of land near a forested stretch in Sarnatoli. Police and revenue department personnel swiftly arrived at the location after receiving crucial information from local villagers, immediately initiating seizure and verification procedures.
According to Balrampur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Anmol Toppo, "We received specific information about opium farming activities in this area, and seizure operations are currently underway. The cultivation was being conducted on approximately 2.5 to 3 acres of land. A dedicated probe team has been deployed and is actively working on the investigation."
To ensure security and prevent any tampering with evidence, police teams have been stationed at the site overnight. Preliminary investigations suggest the land belongs to a tribal resident and had allegedly been leased to a man from Jharkhand, who is suspected of cultivating the opium crop there.

This fresh recovery has intensified political controversy surrounding narcotics in Chhattisgarh. Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel commented that the earlier Durg case was merely the beginning of what he described as organized drug trade operating under political protection.
"Another opium crop has been discovered and seized. I had previously stated that the Durg case represented only the initial exposure of this problem. The trade in opium and synthetic drugs is being conducted in an organized manner under the protection of the chief minister and the home minister," Baghel asserted.
The Congress party has announced statewide protests scheduled for March 12, during which party workers plan to gherao (surround) BJP district offices across Chhattisgarh. These demonstrations are intended to highlight what the opposition party characterizes as the spread of narcotics under political patronage.

The demolition was carried out in Samoda village under the Jevra-Sirsa outpost area, supervised by the tehsildar with police and revenue teams present.
