NIA Intensifies Probe Into Kaliachak Judicial Officers Hostage Incident
The National Investigation Agency has taken significant steps in its investigation of the April 1 hostage situation at the Kaliachak-II Block Development Office in Malda, West Bengal. On Saturday, the agency recorded the detailed statement of one of the judicial officers who was held captive during the disturbing incident.
Police Custody Secured for Main Accused
In a parallel development, the NIA successfully secured two weeks of police custody for the primary accused in the case, Mofakkerul Islam. This custody period will allow investigators to conduct intensive questioning as they work to unravel the full scope of the conspiracy behind the attack on judicial officers.
Investigative sources revealed that the ongoing interrogation has led to the detention of three additional individuals, though no formal arrests had been confirmed by authorities as of late Saturday evening. The agency's investigative teams conducted multiple site visits throughout the day, beginning at the Kaliachak-II BDO office where the hostage situation unfolded, followed by visits to Mothabari police station and the Superintendent of Police's office.
Establishing Premeditation in Attack
Central to the NIA's investigation is determining whether the assault on the judicial officers' convoy was a premeditated act. Investigators are meticulously examining the identities of individuals who gathered outside the BDO office and those responsible for erecting barricades on the highway where the convoy was ambushed and subjected to stone pelting.
"The questioning focused on identifying officers posted both inside and outside the BDO office during the incident, along with the specific security measures implemented when it became evident that a hostile mob had assembled," explained a Malda police source familiar with the investigation.
Additional Statements and Supreme Court Report
The NIA has announced plans to record the statement of Ramprasad Mandal, the driver of the pilot car accompanying the judicial convoy who sustained injuries during the attack and remains hospitalized. Both the judicial officer's statement and Mandal's forthcoming testimony will constitute crucial components of the agency's comprehensive report to the Supreme Court, scheduled for submission on Monday.
District Administration Denies Security Concerns Letter
In a related development, the Malda district administration issued a formal denial on Saturday regarding reports that judicial officers had communicated security concerns prior to the publication of supplementary voter lists. District officials characterized such reports as "factually incorrect," asserting that no such correspondence had been received by the administration.
Accused Movements Under Scrutiny
Investigative sources have disclosed that Mofakkerul Islam spent the night of April 1 in Mothabari before departing for Bagdogra airport early the following morning. Meanwhile, local villagers have offered conflicting accounts, claiming that Islam was not physically present at the Kaliachak-II BDO office during the hostage incident. According to these accounts, his involvement was limited to addressing a crowd at Sujapur, where Trinamool Congress representative Sabina Yeasmin and Congress candidate Abdul Hannan had also delivered speeches.
The NIA's expanded investigation continues to develop as authorities work to establish a complete timeline of events and identify all individuals involved in planning and executing the attack on judicial officers performing their official duties.
