NIA Raids Kerala Locations Over Gelatin Stick Seizure

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted simultaneous raids across multiple districts in Kerala on Saturday, targeting locations in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod. The operation is linked to the seizure of a large cache of gelatin sticks and detonators from Tirurangadi in Malappuram district earlier this year. Agency reports indicate that searches were also carried out in the neighboring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Details of the Seizure

In February this year, the Kerala state police seized 89,600 gelatin sticks concealed in 448 boxes, along with 10,500 non-electric shock-tube detonators, from a truck that was transporting onions. Six individuals were arrested in connection with this incident. The truck was intercepted in Tirurangadi, leading to the discovery of the explosives.

Scope of the Raids

According to sources, the searches began early Saturday morning at the residences and business establishments of the accused and other suspects. The operation covered multiple locations, including Tirurangadi, Vandoor, Eranjimavu, and several sites in Kannur and Kasaragod districts. The NIA took over the case more than a month ago, and the central agency had moved the Judicial First Class Magistrate-I Court in Parappanangadi to transfer the case records to its special court in Kochi.

Investigation Focus

According to the police investigation, the explosives were intended for illegal quarrying. Given the large quantity of explosives seized, the central agency decided to conduct a comprehensive probe. Sources said the NIA investigation is focused on the illegal transportation of explosives and the motives of those involved. The explosives are believed to have originated in Bijapur, Karnataka. The case was registered under Sections 4 (possession of explosives with intent to endanger life or property) and 5 (possession under suspicious circumstances) of the Explosive Substances Act.

Legal Proceedings

The NIA has taken over the investigation to ensure a thorough examination of the network behind the illegal transportation and use of explosives. The agency is working to identify all individuals involved and to determine the full extent of the conspiracy. The raids are part of a broader effort to crack down on the illegal quarrying and explosive trade in the region.
