Nigerian Undertrial Prisoner Succumbs to Health Issues in Greater Noida Hospital

A Nigerian national, who was lodged as an undertrial prisoner in a jail, passed away during medical treatment at a Greater Noida hospital on Monday. The deceased, identified as Solomon, aged 66, had been suffering from chronic health conditions for an extended period.

Chronic Health Problems and Sudden Cardiac Arrest

According to jail authorities, Solomon was afflicted with severe health issues, including high blood pressure and advanced kidney disease. On Friday morning, around 10 am, he suddenly experienced breathing difficulties within the jail premises and suffered a cardiac arrest. Jail staff promptly shifted him to the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) Hospital for emergency care. However, doctors at the hospital declared him dead upon arrival.

Police officials stated that the exact cause of death will be determined after the completion of mandatory legal formalities. Solomon had been in judicial custody since May 31, 2023, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He was housed in the Gautam Budh Nagar District Jail, located in Luksar village.

Legal Procedures and Family Notification

Following the incident, GIMS Hospital authorities informed the Ecotech-I police station about the death. Police officials confirmed that the deceased's family members and the intelligence department have been notified. Further legal procedures are being carried out in accordance with established protocols.

Jail administration officials revealed that Solomon had been undergoing medical treatment for his ailments at various hospitals in Delhi and Meerut prior to his death. His health condition had remained critical for some time, underscoring the severity of his chronic illnesses.

Background: Arrest in Major Anti-Narcotics Operation

Solomon was among ten foreign nationals arrested on May 17, 2023, during an anti-narcotics operation conducted by the Greater Noida Police. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by then assistant commissioner of police Arvind Kumar intercepted a car carrying suspected foreign drug traffickers.

During interrogation, the accused disclosed details about a drug manufacturing unit operating from a house in the Theta sector under the Beta-II police station limits. Police subsequently raided the premises and busted an alleged drug factory being run from the rented house.

In the operation, officers arrested ten foreign nationals and recovered a large quantity of narcotic substances. This included cocaine and approximately 46 kilograms of MDMA, along with raw chemicals and equipment used for manufacturing synthetic drugs. Following the arrests, a case was registered at the Beta-II police station under various sections of the NDPS Act and Section 14 of the Foreigners Act.

The death of Solomon highlights the ongoing challenges faced by undertrial prisoners with serious health conditions in the judicial system. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his demise while adhering to legal protocols.
