Eyewitnesses and Father Recall Failed Rescue as Noida Techie Cried for Help

A 27-year-old software engineer named Yuvraj Mehta met a tragic end in Noida. His SUV plunged into a deep, water-filled pit on a foggy night. The incident occurred in Sector 150, where an excavation had been left open for nearly two years.

A Desperate Struggle for Survival

Trapped in the nearly 30-feet-deep hole, Mehta fought for his life for almost 90 minutes. He climbed onto the roof of his car to stay above the water. Using his phone, he called his father and flashed the torchlight to signal for help.

His father, Raj Mehta, rushed to the site after receiving the call and location details. He arrived to find his son stranded in the pit, with rescue efforts already underway.

Rescue Teams Battle Adverse Conditions

Rescue teams from the SDRF and later the NDRF responded to the scene. They faced immense challenges including thick fog, freezing temperatures, and the sheer depth of the excavation. Despite their efforts, they could not reach Mehta in time to save him.

A passerby also attempted a rescue but was unsuccessful. Over 100 people reportedly watched the unfolding tragedy, unable to assist effectively.

Negligence and Legal Action

The excavation pit had no barricades or warning lights, creating a deadly hazard. It had previously caused a similar accident, highlighting ongoing safety lapses.

Following the incident, police registered an FIR against two builders. They face charges of culpable homicide and negligence. Authorities stated they would coordinate with the Noida Authority to address safety issues in the area.

Family's Sole Earning Member Lost

Yuvraj Mehta was the sole earning member of his family. His death leaves them in a precarious financial situation, adding to the tragedy of the loss.

This incident underscores the critical need for proper safety measures at construction sites. It serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of negligence in urban development.
