A non-resident Indian (NRI) tragically lost his life in a shocking incident of accidental firearm discharge in Punjab's Fazilka district on Monday evening. The victim, identified as Harwinder Singh, also known as Sonu, succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his residence in Dhani Sucha Singh village.

CCTV Footage Reveals Tragic Sequence of Events

According to police investigations, the fatal accident was captured on closed-circuit television. The footage examined by officials showed Harwinder Singh seated on a sofa with relatives. A loaded revolver was tucked into his waistband. The tragedy unfolded the moment he stood up from the sofa, causing the weapon to accidentally discharge. The bullet struck him in the abdomen, causing severe injuries.

Rushed Treatment and Fatal Outcome

Following the accidental shooting, the seriously injured man was immediately rushed to a government hospital for emergency care. Due to the critical nature of his wounds, he was referred to a larger facility in Bathinda for advanced treatment. Sadly, Harwinder Singh passed away en route to Bathinda. He leaves behind his wife and a two-year-old daughter.

Police Investigation and Political Response

Upon receiving information about the incident, Balluana police station SHO Ravinder Sharma visited the scene and secured the crucial CCTV evidence. The police conducted a post-mortem examination on Tuesday before handing over the body to the grieving family for last rites, which were performed that afternoon.

The incident drew swift political attention. Local Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, including MLA Goldy Musafir, along with villagers, visited the government hospital. Musafir expressed profound grief over the untimely death and offered condolences to the family. Notably, the deceased's father, Darshan Singh, had recently won a panchayat samiti election, adding to the family's distress during what should have been a celebratory time.

This tragic event underscores the grave dangers of improper firearm handling. Harwinder Singh had recently returned from abroad and settled in his home village, making his sudden death a profound loss for the local community.
