Ludhiana: The city police have registered a case against a Canada-based non-resident Indian (NRI) and his father from Mohali for allegedly defrauding a Ludhiana resident of ₹7 lakh. The accused promised to secure a transportation tender with the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in Jalalabad but failed to deliver.
Details of the Alleged Fraud
The accused have been identified as Anmol Ratan Singh and his father Balkarn Singh Bhatti, both residents of Phase 7, Mohali. According to the complainant, Manveer Singh Dhaliwal, the duo took ₹15 lakh from him in 2018, claiming they had connections with senior officials at FCI. While ₹8 lakh was later returned, the remaining ₹7 lakh was not repaid despite repeated requests.
Dhaliwal, a resident of Kasabad village and coordinator of the Punjab Youth Congress, stated that he had known Anmol for nearly a decade. He invested in the deal while planning to start a business after completing his college education. However, the promised tender never materialized.
Legal Proceedings
After initial complaints did not yield results, Dhaliwal approached the Bureau of Investigation. The bureau referred the matter back to Ludhiana police, leading to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) at the Salem Tabari police station. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Hardev Singh confirmed that a case has been filed under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating), and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The accused are yet to be arrested.
This case highlights the risks of trusting individuals who promise government contracts through alleged connections. Authorities advise the public to verify such claims through official channels before making any investments.
