Parking Dispute Over Fortuner Escalates to Fatal Shooting in East Delhi
A long-standing parking conflict turned deadly in the early hours of Monday in East Delhi's Preet Vihar neighborhood, resulting in the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man. The incident, which occurred shortly after 2 AM, stemmed from a dispute over the parking of a Toyota Fortuner SUV.
Neighborly Conflict Turns Violent
Pankaj Nayyar, a 34-year-old resident, was shot dead outside his family's five-storey building allegedly by his neighbor Gaurav Sharma. Sharma, who had moved into the building as a tenant just six months earlier, reportedly engaged in a violent confrontation with Nayyar over parking arrangements.
The tragedy unfolded when Nayyar's brother, Paras Nayyar, called him from Noida to help resolve the escalating argument. Paras had initially planned to travel to Noida but instead summoned his brother to their Preet Vihar home to help defuse the tense situation.
Parking Tensions Boil Over
The building's ground-floor parking area had been a recurring source of friction between the two families. Sharma owned three vehicles - a BMW, a Fortuner, and another car - while the Nayyar family owned two vehicles - a Maruti Baleno and a Maruti Swift.
Paras Nayyar revealed that he had previously attempted to accommodate Sharma by allowing him to use a parking space in an adjacent building owned by his family. However, tensions reached a breaking point when Sharma parked his Fortuner directly in front of the Nayyar family's gate, effectively blocking their entry.
"When I saw that he had parked his Fortuner right in front of our gate, blocking the entry, I asked him to remove it," Paras told reporters. "He started arguing, abusing and threatening me. By then, neighbors had also gathered and tried to resolve the issue."
Fatal Confrontation Unfolds
According to Paras's account, the argument had initially been resolved, and his brother was about to return to Noida. However, Sharma allegedly continued to instigate the situation through repeated phone calls filled with abuse and threats against the family.
When Pankaj Nayyar finally arrived at the scene around 2 AM, Sharma and his associates reportedly began assaulting him. The situation escalated rapidly when Sharma allegedly produced a firearm and shot Pankaj Nayyar. Paras also sustained injuries when Sharma allegedly struck him on the head with the pistol butt before fleeing the scene.
"Within minutes, before we could even call the police, he pulled out a gun and shot my brother, and then hit me on the head with the butt of his pistol before fleeing," Paras alleged.
Police Response and Investigation
Delhi Police received two PCR calls regarding the incident - the first at 2:22 AM followed by another at 2:26 AM - both reporting a quarrel and gunfire. Police subsequently arrested 42-year-old Gaurav Sharma from Model Town, while his two accomplices who allegedly joined the assault remain at large.
Relatives of the Nayyar family have alleged that two associates of Sharma arrived on a motorcycle and participated in the assault. Building security personnel noted that while parking disputes are common in the area, they rarely escalate to this level of violence, which is why they typically avoid intervening.
A case has been registered at Preet Vihar police station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including sections 103 (murder), 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), and 3(5) (common intention), along with sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.
Family Dynamics and Living Arrangements
The building's residential arrangement added complexity to the situation. Paras Nayyar (43) lives with his parents on the second floor of the building, while Sharma resides on the first floor. The proximity of their living spaces likely contributed to the intensity of the ongoing conflict over shared parking resources.
This tragic incident highlights how seemingly mundane neighborhood disputes can escalate into fatal violence, raising concerns about conflict resolution mechanisms in densely populated urban areas.
