Police Crack Down on Liquor Smuggling in Ballia, Seize Massive Haul
Police in Varanasi made a significant breakthrough on Sunday. They arrested a liquor smuggler and recovered a huge quantity of illegal Indian made foreign liquor. The operation took place in the Narhi police station area of Ballia district.
Massive Seizure Worth Rs 75 Lakh
Officers seized a staggering 9,086.4 litres of illegal liquor. The estimated value of this contraband stands at approximately Rs 75 lakh. This represents one of the larger hauls intercepted in the region recently.
Accused Identified and Booked
The arrested individual is Achala Ram. He is a resident of Barmer district in Rajasthan. Police have booked him under sections 60, 63, and 72 of the Excise Act at the Narhi police station. The legal process is now underway.
How the Police Operation Unfolded
A police team led by Narhi Station Officer Virendra Kumar Singh was performing duty at Ujiyar Ghat Korantadih. They received specific intelligence about a suspicious truck. The information indicated that a truck with registration number NL01AB6544 was loaded with liquor.
The vehicle was coming from the Ghazipur side via the Purvanchal Expressway. Its intended destination was Bihar, via the Bharauli route. However, the driver reportedly changed course upon seeing checking points at the Buxar border. He diverted the truck onto the Ballia road instead.
Interception and Arrest
Acting swiftly on the tip-off, the police team set up surveillance. They successfully intercepted the truck near the Sohanv petrol pump. The driver, Achala Ram, was taken into custody at the scene.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered the illicit cargo. The liquor, comprising various brands, was cleverly concealed. It was packed in cartons and strategically placed behind stacks of egg cartons, an attempt to avoid detection during routine checks.
The seizure and arrest mark a successful operation for the local police. It highlights ongoing efforts to curb the illegal liquor trade in the area. Further investigations are likely to follow as authorities probe the smuggling network.
