Prayagraj mela police have rolled out an eight-tier security system and ten comprehensive plans to manage crowds and traffic. They expect three to four crore devotees at the Ganga banks on Mauni Amavasya. This event marks the third and largest snan of the Magh Mela on January 18.
Massive Turnout in Past Weeks
Over the last fourteen days, Sangam has witnessed a massive turnout. Approximately three crore devotees took holy dips and performed rituals. Makar Sankranti emerged as a highlight with 1.85 crore devotees participating in just two days.
Traffic and Vehicle Restrictions
Authorities implemented a strict no-vehicle zone plan in and around the mela campus. They diverted traffic on seven key routes leading into the city. Senior mela police officials held crucial meetings with prominent seers and heads of social, religious, and spiritual organizations. They sought active cooperation to manage the enormous crowd effectively.
Strict Crowd Control Measures
Mela police ensure devotees return via the same sector or zone they entered from. They strictly prohibit movement towards the Sangam Nose area. Devotees must stick to designated ghats for their holy dips.
All administrative officials, police personnel, and sector magistrates remain on the ground. They supervise their respective areas continuously. With twenty-four ghats spread across eight kilometers, authorities encourage devotees to dip at the ghat nearest their entry point. They should then head back immediately from that location.
Preventing Overcrowding
Evacuation teams and super ten squads deploy strategically to prevent ghat overcrowding. Mela cops utilize resources like ropes, loudspeakers, whistles, flying squads, and watchtowers. These tools ensure complete control over hard barriers and barricades.
Foolproof Security Bandobast
SP Neeraj Pandey of Magh Mela told TOI about their preparations. He stated, "In view of Mauni Amavasya snan, mela police have drafted a foolproof security bandobast for pilgrim safety. With millions flocking to the tent city daily, elaborate arrangements are firmly in place."
Strong Police Contingent
A strong contingent of fifteen thousand policemen, including paramilitary personnel, now performs duties. They man thirty-two static locations equipped with modern gadgets. Temporary holding areas, parking facilities, and overnight stay arrangements are fully operational to manage the crowd smoothly.
Enhanced Ghat Infrastructure
Authorities reinforce infrastructure at all twenty-four ghats to accommodate the large numbers. Provisions include:
- River barricading and jal police
- Watchtowers and improved lighting
- Clear signage and ample toilets
- Changing rooms and comprehensive cleanliness measures
Devotees receive clear instructions to remain vigilant. They should steer clear of rumors and report any concerns promptly. A dedicated team comprising mela police, traffic police, and specialized doctors works round the clock. They assist devotees during emergencies.
Appeal for Cooperation
SP Pandey appealed directly to devotees for cooperation. He urged them to stay in their lanes while moving for dips. After performing rituals, they should proceed straight to parking or their destinations. Cops also request patience and advise avoiding jostling.
Plans actively check congestion on streets entering and exiting the Sangam area. A network of 1524 CCTV sets, along with drones, helps mela cops assess crowd density in real-time. They take immediate action to regulate flow based on this surveillance.
