Pregnant Woman Dies in Fall After Dowry Harassment

A 26-year-old pregnant woman died after allegedly falling from her in-laws' residence in a multistoreyed building in northeast Delhi's New Mustafabad on Monday. Police have registered a case of dowry death in connection with the incident.

Police received information about a woman being admitted to a hospital with injuries. She was brought by her husband but was declared dead by doctors. The woman's family alleged that she had been facing harassment over dowry demands ever since her marriage, which took place only three months ago.

The victim's brother told TOI, 'He would ask my sister for her jewellery and ask her to bring more so he could sell it and buy an e-rickshaw. He would hit her.' The woman had reportedly been pleading with her brother to take her back home, fearing that her husband would kill her.

The woman's mother said, 'She used to tell me that her husband tortured her and kept demanding dowry. I want justice for my daughter.'

Sister's Account

The victim's sister claimed that the couple had been fighting continuously for the last two to three days. 'My elder brother and other relatives had gone there after an argument related to a room. They had been in a relationship for nearly 10 years before getting married,' she added.

Police Investigation

A postmortem was conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death. Following a magisterial inquiry, a senior police officer confirmed that a case has been registered under Section 80 (dowry death) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on Tuesday.

The incident highlights the persistent issue of dowry-related violence in India, despite legal provisions aimed at protecting women.
