Pune Contractor Arrested for Homicide After Wall Collapse Kills Two Workers
In a tragic incident at Talawade, Pune, two construction workers lost their lives after a compound wall collapsed on them during work at a thermal company. The Dehu Road police have taken swift action, arresting a labour contractor on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, highlighting severe lapses in safety protocols.
Details of the Fatal Accident
The accident occurred on Friday at the premises of a thermal company located in Jyotibanagar, Talawade. According to police investigations, an earth-moving machine was engaged in sand-filling work when it struck an under-construction brick compound wall. This wall, which was being built around a 15-foot-deep ditch, collapsed onto three workers who were inside the ditch plastering it.
The victims have been identified as Sachin Rathod, aged 30, and his wife Koma Rathod, aged 25, both of whom died on the spot. A third worker, Manohar Chavan, aged 36, sustained serious injuries in the incident. Chavan later filed a formal complaint with the Dehu Road police, leading to the registration of a case under Sections 105 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police Action and Charges
Based on Chavan's complaint, the police have booked not only the labour contractor but also the operator of the earth-moving machine and the owner of the thermal company. The contractor has been arrested, while a search is underway for the machine operator and the company owner. An officer from the Dehu Road police stated that the contractor had hired daily-wage workers for the construction work without providing essential safety gear such as helmets and safety jackets.
The charges include culpable homicide not amounting to murder and acts endangering life or personal safety of others, reflecting the negligence that contributed to the fatal outcome. The police emphasized that the lack of proper safety measures directly led to the deaths and injuries.
