Pune Customs Intercepts High-Value Hydroponic Weed at Airport
In a significant enforcement action, officials from the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Pune customs have seized nearly 1 kilogram of high-end hydroponic weed from a passenger who arrived from Bangkok. This incident highlights ongoing efforts to combat drug smuggling at Pune airport.
Details of the Seizure and Arrest
The passenger landed in Pune on an Air India Express flight (IX-241) from Thailand. Customs officials recovered a total of 960 grams of hydroponic weed, which is estimated to have a market value of Rs 33.60 lakh in the illicit drug trade. The contraband was found concealed in the passenger's hand baggage, specifically in two transparent vacuum-sealed packets that had been wrapped in carbon paper.
An official stated, "The use of carbon paper by smugglers is a common tactic, as they believe it helps evade detection during x-ray scanning. However, our vigilance led to the successful interception in this case." The passenger has been arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and further investigations are underway to uncover the larger network involved in this smuggling attempt.
Context of Recent Drug Busts
This seizure follows a major haul by Pune customs on March 29, where almost 77 kilograms of hydroponic weed, valued at over Rs 26 crore, was recovered, leading to one arrest. The repeated use of similar concealment methods, such as carbon paper wrapping, underscores the persistent challenges faced by authorities in detecting sophisticated smuggling operations.
Customs officials emphasized that carbon paper has been frequently employed by smugglers to hide not only drugs but also other contraband like gold. They are intensifying efforts to identify and dismantle the networks behind these activities, with a focus on enhancing surveillance and detection technologies at airports.
The ongoing investigations aim to trace the origins and distribution channels of the seized hydroponic weed, which is known for its high potency and premium quality in the illegal market. Authorities urge the public to report any suspicious activities to help curb such illicit trade.
