Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has declared that the state government will fully comply with the Supreme Court's order regarding the management of stray dogs. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mann emphasized that the government would follow the court's directive both in letter and spirit.
Supreme Court Directive on Stray Dogs
The Supreme Court had earlier issued guidelines for the handling of stray dogs across the country, focusing on animal welfare and public safety. The court mandated that local authorities must implement sterilization and vaccination programs, and ensure that dogs are not harmed or removed inhumanely.
CM Mann's Assurance
CM Mann stated, "We respect the Supreme Court's verdict and will implement it strictly. The safety of citizens and the welfare of animals are both our priorities." He added that municipal corporations and local bodies would be directed to adhere to the guidelines, including proper feeding and shelter arrangements for stray dogs.
The state government will also launch awareness campaigns to educate the public about responsible behavior towards stray animals. Mann urged citizens to cooperate with authorities in implementing the order effectively.
Reactions from Animal Rights Groups
Animal rights organizations have welcomed the announcement, expressing hope that it will lead to more humane treatment of stray dogs in Punjab. They emphasized the need for sustained sterilization drives and community participation.
This move comes amid rising concerns over dog bites and conflicts between residents and stray animals. The Supreme Court's order aims to balance public safety with animal rights, a challenge that many states are grappling with.
