Punjab Police Arrests 30,721 in Anti-Gangster Campaign

Chandigarh: The Punjab Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested 30,721 individuals after conducting 77,895 raids across the state since the launch of the 'Gangstran Te Vaar' campaign on January 20.

Special DGP (law and order) P K Sinha informed that police teams recovered 569 weapons along with 1,613 live cartridges and 157 magazines, 181 sharp-edged weapons and seven hand grenades from the possession of arrested individuals.

"Apart from this, preventive action has been initiated against 13,007 persons, whereas 17,711 persons were verified and released after questioning," said Sinha, adding that, "Police teams have also arrested 1,108 proclaimed offenders (POs) since the campaign's launch."

"On Day 120, police teams arrested 246 individuals after conducting 557 raids, while preventive action was taken against 10 persons. Ten POs were also arrested," said the special DGP.

Fight against drugs

A police spokesperson said that under the state govt's 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign, police teams arrested 68 drug smugglers on Wednesday -- the 445th day of the drive. So far, the police have arrested 64,844 persons under the initiative, the spokesperson added.

On Wednesday, police teams also seized 14.8 kg of heroin, 12 kg of ICE (methamphetamine), 873 intoxicant tablets/capsules and Rs 2,900 in drug money from smugglers, said the spokesperson.
