The Punjab government has taken strict disciplinary action against a senior police officer in Amritsar. Senior Superintendent of Police (Vigilance) Lakhbir Singh has been suspended with immediate effect for alleged grave misconduct and dereliction of duty.
Immediate Suspension Order Issued
An official order issued on Friday, under Rule 4(1)(a) of the Punjab Civil Services (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1970, mandated the suspension. The state Vigilance Bureau clarified the action on Saturday, stating it followed an internal complaint received against the officer.
The core allegation against SSP Lakhbir Singh is unauthorised interference in matters outside his official domain. The Vigilance Bureau stated that appropriate disciplinary proceedings have been initiated in response to the complaint.
Restrictions and Previous Case
During the suspension period, Lakhbir Singh's headquarters will be the office of the Director General of Police in Chandigarh. He has been directed not to leave this headquarters without obtaining prior permission from the competent authority.
This incident marks the second high-profile suspension of a Senior Superintendent of Police in Amritsar within a month. Last month, the government suspended Amritsar (Rural) SSP Maninder Singh for allegedly failing to take strict action against gangsters operating in his jurisdiction.
Officer Declines Comment
When approached for a statement, the suspended officer, Lakhbir Singh, declined to comment on the allegations or the suspension order. The case highlights the Punjab administration's recent crackdown on disciplinary issues within the police force, particularly in the key border district of Amritsar.
