Punjabi-origin Canadian gets 20 years in US for drug trafficking

Guramrit Sidhu, a 63-year-old Canadian national of Punjabi origin, was sentenced on Friday to 20 years in a US federal prison for leading a criminal organization that trafficked hundreds of kilograms of methamphetamine and cocaine from the United States into Canada. The sentence was handed down by US District Judge John A. Kronstadt, according to a release from the United States Attorney's office.

Details of the Drug Trafficking Operation

Sidhu, a resident of Brampton, Ontario, pleaded guilty on March 26 to one count of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise. He has been in federal custody since October 2024. According to his plea agreement, from September 2020 to February 2023, Sidhu led a drug trafficking organization that smuggled narcotics from the US into Canada for distribution.

Between September 13 and October 24, 2022, Sidhu orchestrated eight separate drug loads, totaling approximately 523 kg of methamphetamine and 347 kg of cocaine, all of which were seized by law enforcement. These drug loads had an estimated wholesale value of $15 million to $17 million.

Method of Smuggling

After purchasing bulk quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine in the US, Sidhu arranged for the narcotics to be transported into Canada via long-haul semi-trucks. He provided telephone numbers and serial numbers on bills of currency for couriers to use as a “token” for identification purposes during the deliveries. Once the shipments reached Canada, Sidhu and his co-conspirators retrieved the narcotics from designated locations for further distribution.

Investigation and Sentencing of Co-conspirators

According to the US Attorney's office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) shared updates about the sentencing. Sidhu is the eighth defendant to plead guilty in this matter. Several other defendants have already been sentenced to federal prison terms ranging from 27 months to 108 months.

The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the FBI, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles Interagency Metropolitan Police Apprehension Crime Task Force (LA IMPACT), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, United States Customs and Border Protection, and Mexican law enforcement authorities. Significant assistance was also provided by Homeland Security Investigations and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs worked with Canadian authorities to secure Sidhu’s arrest and extradition to the US in October 2024.
