In anticipation of massive crowds for New Year celebrations, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, Y B Khurania, has issued a directive for a comprehensive security blueprint for Puri. The focus is on ensuring the safety of visitors and smooth darshan at the iconic Jagannath Temple, alongside managing the surge at Puri beach.
High-Level Meeting to Fine-Tune Arrangements
On Tuesday, DGP Khurania chaired a crucial meeting with senior police officers, including several former Superintendents of Police (SPs) of Puri. The objective was to gather their expert inputs and refine the security strategy. Khurania emphasised that foolproof crowd control measures must be established both inside and outside the temple premises to prevent any untoward incidents.
The discussions also centred on effective traffic management plans to handle the expected influx of vehicles. The DGP instructed that all devotees must be properly frisked before entering the shrine, citing paramount security concerns. "Safety of visitors and hassle-free darshan remain our top priorities," Khurania stated, urging officers to adopt a meticulous approach in both planning and execution.
Beach Vigilance and Contingency Planning
Recognising Puri beach as a major tourist draw during the holidays, the DGP highlighted the need for heightened vigilance there. He advised the deployment of additional police personnel for patrolling and directed authorities to position lifeguards at strategic points to prevent drowning incidents. "Tourists must feel secure both at the temple and on the beach," Khurania added.
The high-level meeting also covered coordination with the local administration and temple authorities. Plans were discussed to streamline entry and exit points, regulate queues effectively, and ensure that medical facilities are readily available. Senior officers were tasked with preparing detailed contingency plans to address potential emergencies, such as stampedes or natural hazards.
Rollout and Preparedness Drills
Police sources indicated that the comprehensive security plan will be formally rolled out in the coming days. Mock drills are likely to be conducted to test the preparedness of all agencies involved. Furthermore, Arun Bothra, the Additional Director General of Police (Railways), mentioned that adequate preparations are being planned to manage the rush of passengers and ensure their safety at the Puri railway station.
The directive from the state's top police official underscores the administration's proactive steps to manage the dual challenges of religious tourism and holiday recreation in one of Odisha's most popular coastal destinations.
