A long-simmering land dispute in Bihar's Purnia district erupted into large-scale violence on Thursday, resulting in significant property damage and multiple injuries. The incident, which took place within the jurisdiction of the Barhara Kothi police station, saw a mob set fire to heavy machinery, escalating a local conflict into a major law and order situation.
Dispute Over Land Sparks Chaotic Clash
The trouble began when a group of individuals allegedly launched an attack on a construction site. The site was at the centre of a contentious land ownership debate between two rival parties. What started as a heated argument quickly spiralled out of control as tempers flared. The verbal confrontation soon turned physical, with the assembled crowd resorting to extreme violence.
Arson and Extensive Damage Reported
In a brazen act of destruction, the agitated mob set ablaze a JCB excavator machine and two tractor-trolleys present at the location. The fire caused extensive damage to the expensive equipment, completely gutting them. The attack also left several people injured during the chaotic clash, though the exact number and severity of injuries are being confirmed by local authorities.
Police Action: FIR and Arrests
Responding swiftly to the incident, the police have initiated a strong legal crackdown. An FIR (First Information Report) has been officially lodged against 34 named individuals in connection with the violence. Among those accused are Vidyanand Mandal and his son, Sadanand Mandal. Law enforcement has confirmed that Sadanand Mandal has already been taken into custody. Police teams are now actively working to identify and apprehend the remaining accused persons involved in the rioting and arson.
The case highlights the recurring issue of land disputes in the region and their potential to boil over into public violence. The local administration is on high alert to prevent any further escalation of tension in the area.
