A raid on the residence of a deceased former union leader with multiple criminal cases in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city uncovered over Rs 5 crore in cash, gold, silver, six weapons, and 6,350 cartridges, a police official said on Saturday.
Details of the Seizure
The raid was conducted on Friday at the Mitmita residence of Baba Farzan, a union leader active in the 1980s and 1990s who died last month due to diabetes, the official said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shashikant Satav stated, “We seized Rs 5.26 crore in unaccounted cash, 151 grams of gold, and 3.9 kilograms of silver. Four rifles (12 bore and 0.22 bore) and two pistols along with 6,350 live cartridges have also been found.”
Background of the Deceased
Farzan, who passed away last month from diabetes, had four cases registered against him earlier, the DCP informed. Four of the six firearms are licensed, while investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the other two.
Inventory of Seized Items
The cartridges include 632 of 12 bore, 1,878 of 7.65 caliber, and 3,840 of 0.22 rifles. Sharp-edged weapons such as swords and ‘guptis’ (traditional sword sticks) were also seized. The unaccounted cash was in bundles of Rs 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 notes, counted using five machines. Information about the cash, gold, and silver has been shared with the Income Tax department for further investigation.
Detention and Investigation
Farzan’s second wife was detained for questioning. Further probe into the case is being carried out by the Chawni police station, the official added.
