In a significant operation, Ranchi police have apprehended a key member of a criminal syndicate involved in the illegal trade of opium and poppy plant bulbs. The authorities confiscated narcotics materials valued at approximately Rs 88.50 lakh along with Rs 2.28 lakh in cash from the suspect, as confirmed by police officials on Tuesday.
Night Raid Leads to Major Drug Bust
The police action unfolded on Monday night in Budri village, located within the jurisdiction of the Namkum police station. Acting on a credible tip-off, a specialized team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Amar Pandey conducted a targeted raid at the residence of the accused, identified as Manish Tirkey.
During the operation, law enforcement officers seized a substantial haul of illicit materials. This included a total of 35 bags filled with poppy plant bulbs, which are commonly processed to produce opium. The contraband was discovered both inside Tirkey's house and in a vehicle associated with him. Additionally, authorities recovered a packet containing 700 grams of processed opium and a digital weighing machine, indicating the scale of the illegal operations.
Syndicate Spans Multiple Districts
Senior Superintendent of Police, Rural, Praveen Pushkar provided further details on the investigation. The accused revealed during interrogation that a well-organized group has been actively engaged in the purchase and distribution of opium across several districts. This syndicate reportedly includes members from Ranchi, Khunti, and Hazaribag, utilizing multiple four-wheelers to facilitate their drug trafficking activities.
Pushkar emphasized that the police are intensifying their efforts to dismantle the entire network. "Raids are currently underway to apprehend the remaining members of this criminal gang," he stated, underscoring the commitment to eradicating such illegal enterprises from the region.
This bust highlights the ongoing challenges in combating narcotics trade in the area and showcases the proactive measures taken by Ranchi police to address drug-related crimes. The seizure of such a large quantity of materials and cash marks a critical blow to the syndicate's operations, potentially disrupting supply chains and curbing the spread of illegal substances in the community.
