Embezzlement Allegations Surface at Ajmer Sharif Dargah
A major controversy has erupted at the revered Ajmer Sharif Dargah in Rajasthan after allegations of money embezzlement came to light. Two individuals have been booked for their alleged involvement in siphoning off Rs 20 lakh in unaccounted cash from the shrine's offerings. The case has raised questions about financial mismanagement at one of India's most prominent Sufi shrines.
Details of the Case
According to police officials, the accused have been identified as a former employee and a local contractor associated with the dargah. They are accused of misappropriating funds collected as donations and offerings from devotees. The unaccounted cash was discovered during a routine audit, prompting the dargah management to file a complaint. The Ajmer police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for criminal breach of trust and cheating.
Dargah Management Responds
The Dargah Committee has expressed shock over the incident and assured strict action against the guilty. "We have zero tolerance for any financial irregularities. The committee has handed over all evidence to the police and will cooperate fully in the investigation," said a committee spokesperson. The shrine, dedicated to the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, attracts millions of devotees annually and generates substantial revenue through donations.
Impact on Devotees and Shrine's Reputation
The embezzlement has left devotees disheartened, with many calling for greater transparency in the management of the dargah's finances. "We come here with faith and donate wholeheartedly. Such incidents shake our trust," said a pilgrim from Delhi. The controversy has also sparked debates about the need for stricter oversight of religious institutions' funds.
Police Investigation Underway
Ajmer Superintendent of Police confirmed that a thorough investigation is in progress. "We are examining financial records and questioning suspects. The accused will be arrested soon," he stated. The police have also sought details of the dargah's income and expenditure over the past few years to identify any systemic lapses.
