A woman who sustained severe burn injuries while attempting to rescue a man set on fire by his brother-in-law in Sangha village, Tarn Taran, succumbed to her injuries on Thursday. The primary victim, Lovepreet Singh, had already died from his burn injuries earlier. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community.

Details of the Incident

According to SHO Navdeep Singh Bhatti of the Sadar police station, Lovepreet Singh, a resident of Kulwa village in Lopoke, had gone to his in-laws' house to bring his wife back home. When he arrived, his wife was not present. His brother-in-law, Sajan Singh, allegedly told him to come back later.

Upon Lovepreet Singh's return, Sajan Singh allegedly poured petrol on him and set him ablaze with a matchstick. In a desperate attempt to save himself, Lovepreet Singh jumped into a nearby drain. However, he suffered severe burn injuries and later died.

Rescuer's Efforts and Tragic Outcome

During the attack, a neighbor named Gurjit Kaur rushed to Lovepreet Singh's rescue. In the process, she also sustained severe burn injuries. She was immediately admitted to a hospital in Amritsar for treatment. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on Thursday, July 4, 2026.

SHO Bhatti confirmed that Lovepreet Singh had already died from his injuries, and Gurjit Kaur passed away on Thursday. The accused, Sajan Singh, also sustained approximately 50 percent burn injuries during the incident. He is currently undergoing treatment at Punjab Hospital, and his condition remains serious.

Legal Action Taken

The police have registered a case against Sajan Singh under Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Investigations are ongoing to gather further evidence and witness statements.

This tragic event highlights the dangers faced by individuals who intervene in violent domestic disputes. The local community mourns the loss of two lives and hopes for justice through the legal proceedings.
