Supreme Court Orders BDO to Surrender in Kolkata Gold Trader Murder

The Supreme Court issued a clear directive on Monday. It ordered Rajganj Block Development Officer Prashant Burman to surrender before a Salt Lake court. He must do this by January 23. This order connects directly to the brutal murder of gold trader Swapan Kamilya.

Details of the Crime and Investigation

Swapan Kamilya faced a horrific ordeal. Alleged kidnappers took him from Salt Lake's Duttabad area. Investigators later discovered his mutilated body in New Town. The Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate launched a thorough probe into this shocking crime.

During their investigation, police identified Prashant Burman as an accused. They formally registered a murder case against him. The police also arrested five individuals. These persons had close ties to the BDO.

Legal Battle Over Anticipatory Bail

Prashant Burman sought to avoid arrest. He approached a lower court and requested anticipatory bail. A Barasat district court granted his plea initially.

However, the police strongly opposed this decision. They challenged the bail order in the Calcutta High Court. The High Court reviewed the case and took decisive action. It cancelled the anticipatory bail granted to Burman.

Following this cancellation, the Bidhannagar ACJM issued a warrant. This warrant authorized Burman's arrest.

Supreme Court's Final Verdict

Facing imminent arrest, Burman turned to the Supreme Court. He approached the apex court seeking relief and protection. The Supreme Court heard his plea on Monday.

The court delivered a firm verdict. It refused to grant Burman any protection from arrest. Instead, the justices directed him to surrender. He must surrender before the competent court within the stipulated timeframe.

State counsel Bivas Chattopadhyay commented on the development. "He will have to surrender before the court now within this week," Chattopadhyay stated. "Once police get to arrest and question him, the investigation will pick up pace."

This Supreme Court order marks a critical juncture. It pushes the high-profile murder investigation forward. All eyes now turn to the Salt Lake court as the January 23 deadline approaches.
