Supreme Court Warns Officials Over Unauthorised Constructions
The Supreme Court on Friday declared that it will fix personal responsibility on erring officials who permit unauthorised constructions. A bench of Justices Satya Prakash and others made the observation while hearing a case related to illegal buildings in Delhi.
Team Set Up for Inspection
The court has constituted a team to inspect unauthorised constructions across the national capital. The team will submit its report within four weeks, identifying officials responsible for allowing such violations.
“We will fix personal responsibility on erring officials,” the bench stated, adding that strict action would be taken against those found negligent. The court also directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and municipal corporations to take immediate action against illegal structures.
Impact on Governance
This move is expected to curb rampant unauthorised construction in Delhi, which has long been a contentious issue. According to earlier reports, over 1,000 illegal buildings were identified in the city, but action remained slow. The court’s intervention aims to ensure accountability at the individual officer level.
“The Supreme Court’s decision sends a strong message that no official is above the law,” said a legal expert familiar with the case. The bench also warned that officials could face contempt proceedings if they fail to comply.
Next Hearing
The matter is listed for further hearing after the inspection report is submitted. The court may then pass orders on punitive measures against responsible officials.
