The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) organized a commemorative function on Saturday at Gurdwara Manji Sahib Diwan Hall to observe the anniversary of the July 4, 1955 police action at the Golden Temple during the Punjabi Suba agitation.
Programme details
The event began with the bhog of Akhand Path, followed by Gurbani kirtan. Addressing the congregation, Giani Rajdeep Singh recalled the events of July 4, 1955, and said successive governments had attempted to weaken the Sikh community by targeting its central religious institutions, including Harmandir Sahib and Akal Takht.
Historical context
Giani Rajdeep Singh noted that while earlier attacks had come from foreign invaders, the 1955 police action was carried out by the government of independent India during the Punjabi Suba movement. The SGPC continues to honor the memory of those who suffered during the incident.
