Shimla Police Detain Two Habitual Drug Offenders Under PIT NDPS Act

The Shimla district police have taken decisive action by placing two habitual offenders involved in illegal drug activities under preventive detention. A formal case has been registered against them under the stringent provisions of the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act.

Details of the Accused and Their Criminal Histories

The first accused, identified as Gagan Bhushan from Bejori village in Rohru tehsil, has been repeatedly engaged in trafficking heroin, commonly known as chitta, and cannabis. Despite multiple arrests, his illicit activities persisted. Between 2019 and 2023, at least four separate cases were registered against him under the NDPS Act. The seizures from these cases varied significantly, ranging from 2.1 grams to 118.9 grams of heroin and over 113 grams of cannabis. As a result of his ongoing criminal behavior, Bhushan has now been sentenced to jail for a period of three months.

The second accused, Narendra Kumar, also known as Nandu, hails from Hatkoti village in Jubbal tehsil. He is similarly a habitual trafficker of heroin, with a pattern of repeated offenses. Between 2023 and 2024, he was arrested four times, with heroin seizures ranging from 1.6 grams to a substantial 468.3 grams. This highlights his continued and escalating involvement in narcotics trafficking despite prior detentions and legal actions.

Police Statement on Preventive Measures

Shimla Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Singh emphasized the critical importance of these preventive detentions. He stated that such measures are essential to disrupt established drug networks, prevent future criminal offenses, and safeguard the youth from the detrimental effects of drug abuse. The police are committed to using all available legal tools to combat the drug menace in the region.

This proactive approach by the Shimla police underscores their dedication to maintaining law and order and protecting the community from the scourge of illegal drugs. The use of the PIT NDPS Act allows for preventive detention to curb the activities of habitual offenders, ensuring they cannot continue to harm society while their cases are processed through the judicial system.
