A horrific incident of matricide has sent shockwaves through a village in Assam's Sribhumi district, leading to the arrest of a 30-year-old woman for allegedly murdering her own mother in a brutal manner.
Gruesome Discovery in Bazaricherra Home
The chilling crime came to light on Sunday afternoon in the Bazaricherra area of Silchar. The victim, identified as 55-year-old Rupjan Bibi, was discovered inside her house with fatal injuries. Her throat was slit and her head was found severed from her body, indicating extreme violence.
Neighbours grew alarmed after there was no response from Rupjan Bibi's residence for several hours. Their concerns prompted them to alert the local police, setting the investigation in motion.
Daughter Becomes Prime Suspect
A police team from the Nagra outpost, led by in-charge Abhijit Bharali, rushed to the spot. They recovered the blood-soaked body from the house and immediately cordoned off the area. As crowds gathered, causing tension, suspicion quickly turned towards the victim's daughter.
Momina Begum, the 30-year-old daughter of the deceased, was reported missing soon after the murder was discovered. Local residents informed the police that she had not been seen since the incident. Acting on a tip-off and based on a written complaint filed by the victim's son accusing his younger sister, police launched a search.
Momina Begum was later traced and arrested from the same locality. She was taken into custody for questioning. Police stated that preliminary findings point towards her alleged involvement in the gruesome crime.
Probe Points to Family Dispute, Security Tightened
Describing the case as "extremely sensitive," officer Abhijit Bharali indicated that initial investigations suggest a family dispute may have been the motive behind the murder. However, he emphasised that all possible angles are being examined and nothing can be confirmed until the investigation is complete.
Based on the formal complaint, police have registered a case and initiated a detailed probe. The body has been sent to Sribhumi Civil Hospital for an autopsy, the report of which is expected to establish the exact cause and time of death.
In the aftermath, security has been tightened in and around Bazaricherra to prevent any untoward incidents, as shocked local residents demand exemplary punishment. The accused, Momina Begum, has been lodged at the women's cell of Patharkandi police station and will be produced before a court after legal formalities are completed.
