Police SIT Conducts Raid at Madrassa in East Champaran, Seizes Firearms
In a significant operation on Sunday, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the police executed a targeted raid at the Islamia Madrassa located in Gawandara village, under the jurisdiction of Chakiya police station in East Champaran district. Acting on a credible tip-off regarding the illicit sale of arms in the area, the SIT swiftly moved to surround the premises and conducted an exhaustive search of the madrassa building.
Recovery of Weapons and Arrests Made
During the meticulous search, law enforcement officials successfully recovered a pistol along with multiple live cartridges and various documents from within the madrassa. In connection with the discovery, three individuals were apprehended on the spot. Those arrested include the cleric of the madrassa, the caretaker, and the cleaner, all of whom are now in police custody. Following the operation, the madrassa was immediately sealed to preserve evidence and prevent any tampering.
East Champaran Superintendent of Police Swarn Prabhat provided details, stating that the police had received specific intelligence pointing towards illegal arms activities centered around the Chakiya police station area, with the madrassa identified as a key location. He emphasized that the SIT acted promptly on this input to ensure a thorough investigation.
Forensic and Investigative Measures Deployed
To bolster the investigation, a forensic team, a dog squad, and other specialized experts were summoned to the scene to assist in gathering and analyzing evidence. Authorities are currently examining CCTV footage from both the madrassa premises and surrounding areas to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify any potential broader networks involved in the alleged illegal activities.
SP Swarn Prabhat further noted that the three arrested individuals are undergoing intensive interrogation, with their mobile phones seized for digital forensic analysis. Preliminary investigations suggest that the recovered weapons might have been planted as part of a larger conspiracy, adding a layer of complexity to the case.
Possible Links to Banned Organization Under Scrutiny
In a concerning development, police are actively investigating possible connections with the banned organization Popular Front of India (PFI). This scrutiny is heightened by the madrassa's prior history; it had previously come under police scrutiny when Yakub, also known as Usman or Sultan, described as a key operative of PFI, was arrested at the same location by Chakiya police with assistance from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS).
The ongoing probe aims to uncover any wider criminal networks and assess the extent of involvement of the arrested individuals. Police sources indicate that the activities of the three are being closely monitored, with every aspect of the case under rigorous examination to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the situation.
This raid underscores the persistent efforts by law enforcement to combat illegal arms trade and maintain security in the region, particularly in sensitive border areas like East Champaran, which has historically been a hotspot for cross-border smuggling activities.
