Tirupur Forest Officials Nab Snake Seller in Sting Operation
In a decisive action against wildlife crime, forest department officers in Tirupur district arrested a 40-year-old snake catcher on Wednesday for illegally possessing and attempting to sell protected snake species. The arrest underscores the ongoing battle against the illicit trade of reptiles in the region.
The Arrest and Seizure
Acting on a specific tip-off about the sale of snakes near Avinashi, a team of forest officers conducted a strategic search operation. The focus was the area near the Chinthamani Theatre bus stop on the Madathupalayam-Karumapalayam road, which falls under the Tirupur forest range.
The officers intercepted Vijayakanth, a 40-year-old resident of Rayankovil near Avinashi, who was traveling on a two-wheeler. A suspicious black bag he was carrying prompted immediate inspection. Upon checking the bag, the officials discovered a live cobra inside, leading to his immediate detention.
Further Investigation Reveals Larger Cache
The initial discovery led investigators to Vijayakanth's farm located at Ochampalayam. A subsequent search of the property revealed that his illegal activities were more extensive. Forest officers found and seized three rat snakes and one water snake that he had illegally caught and was keeping for sale.
During interrogation, Vijayakanth disclosed the motive behind his actions. He confessed to catching and selling snakes, particularly cobras, for use in pujas (religious rituals) and for purported medicinal purposes. This highlights a dangerous demand-driven market that fuels such wildlife crimes.
Legal Repercussions and Official Warning
The Tirupur Forest Department has registered a formal case against Vijayakanth under the stringent Wildlife Protection Act. He is currently under arrest and faces legal proceedings for his actions.
A senior forest officer involved in the case issued a stern warning to the public. He emphasized that catching or keeping snakes without proper training and official authorization is a serious offence. The law mandates punishment for anyone involved in the unauthorized capture, possession, or trade of protected wildlife, including common snake species.
