Mumbai: The General Arun Kumar Vaidya Swimming Pool in Chembur, which remained closed for approximately two months due to leakage issues, will reopen to the public on Tuesday. The pool had been shut since mid-April after leaks were detected.
Impact on Swimmers and Response
The closure significantly affected patrons, including regular swimmers. Anil Galgali, who highlighted the problem and lodged complaints with authorities, stated, "The pool has over 5,000 members and serves a large number of citizens in Chembur and surrounding eastern suburbs. Its reopening is a welcome step."
BMC Inspection and Repairs
On June 9, BMC Additional Commissioner Avinash Dhakne inspected the pool, which was constructed in 2018, and directed the civic administration to take necessary action. BMC M-West Ward Officer Shankar Bhosale confirmed that the Garden Department completed the required repairs, effectively arresting the leakages. "The pool will be open for public use as before," he said.
Planned Beautification and Improvements
Following Dhakne's instructions, the ward will undertake beautification of the pool premises. This includes installing polycarbonate sheets over the viewing gallery roof, creating a new entrance board, and marking lanes for dedicated parking spaces for members. Additionally, garden improvements such as tree planting for shade will be carried out. Bhosale added, "The ward will also establish composting pits in the garden and maintain the pay-and-park facility near the pool. All discarded and scrapped material within the premises will be disposed of."
