Sonipat police on Tuesday busted a fake robbery claim within hours after a Panipat-based trader allegedly concocted a story of being robbed of Rs 15 lakh near Gannaur on National Highway-44.
Incident Details
According to police, the trader informed the police control room that two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants intercepted him near Gannaur and fled with Rs 15 lakh in cash. Following the alert, multiple police teams, including local police stations and the crime unit, rushed to the spot and launched an investigation.
Investigation Reveals Truth
Officials said CCTV footage, technical surveillance and on-ground verification raised suspicion over the complainant's version. During sustained questioning, the trader allegedly confessed that the robbery claim was fabricated and that he deliberately misled the police. Police arrested the accused, identified as Sahil, a resident of Agrasen Colony in Panipat, and recovered the entire Rs 15 lakh from his possession.
Police Warning
Sonipat commissioner of police Mamta Singh said strict legal action would be taken against those attempting to mislead law enforcement agencies with false information. Police also appealed to the public not to lodge fake complaints, warning that such acts amount to a punishable offence under the law.
