Details of the Accident
The car, a Maruti Suzuki Swift, was traveling from Hyderabad towards Vijayawada when it was hit from behind by a private bus traveling at high speed. The impact was so severe that the car was crushed, killing all four occupants on the spot. The deceased were identified as a family of four: the father (35), mother (32), and their two children, aged 7 and 5.
Police Investigation and Response
Nalgonda District Superintendent of Police said, "The bus driver lost control due to overspeeding and rammed the car. We have registered a case and are investigating the matter. The bus driver fled the scene after the accident." Police teams have been deployed to trace the driver. The bodies were sent for postmortem, and the families have been notified.
Impact and Road Safety Concerns
This accident highlights the persistent issue of overspeeding on national highways. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, road accidents in Telangana claimed over 8,000 lives in 2024. Local residents have demanded better enforcement of speed limits and installation of speed breakers near toll plazas. The Chityala toll plaza area has seen multiple accidents in recent years.
Official Statements
Telangana Transport Minister expressed condolences and assured strict action against the bus operator. "We will ensure the bus owner is held accountable and the driver is arrested. Our highways need better surveillance to prevent such tragedies," he stated. The bus was reportedly operating without proper permits, and the transport department has initiated a probe.
