Speeding electric car kills woman, injures two in Mumbai

A 41-year-old woman lost her life, and two others sustained injuries after a speeding electric car struck their two-wheelers on Station Road in Vile Parle (East) on Wednesday evening. The Vile Parle police have arrested the driver, Vilas Gavhankar (44), who was operating the electric SUV involved in the crash.

Accident Details

The incident occurred between 4:30 pm and 5:00 pm when the electric vehicle entered Station Road, allegedly went out of control, and collided with three two-wheelers. The deceased, Kinjal Shah, a resident of Vile Parle (East), had left home for work and succumbed to her injuries before she could be admitted to a hospital. The other two victims, Nirmala Dojiya and Premji Dojiya, sustained injuries and are currently undergoing treatment, police officials confirmed.

Driver's Actions Under Scrutiny

According to the police, Gavhankar, who works as a driver for a South Mumbai resident, was driving in a rash and negligent manner when he hit three individuals near Mogibai Market on Railway Station Road. The injured are being treated at Gawde Hospital. "Gavhankar's blood sample has been sent for testing to determine whether he was under the influence of alcohol. He claimed that he lost control of the electric car. We will seek an expert opinion to verify his claim," a Vile Parle police officer stated.

Witness Accounts

Witnesses informed the police that Gavhankar was driving at a high speed. "The driver was speeding, due to which he lost control of the vehicle and rammed into one parked and two moving two-wheelers," the officer added. The driver has been booked under Sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash and negligent driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
