A 39-year-old man was killed and a woman injured when an unidentified speeding vehicle rammed into their handcart near Talwandi Salem village in Kapurthala district, police said on Sunday.
Details of the incident
According to complainant Sarvan, a resident of Khagaria district in Bihar currently living at Dana Mandi, Uggi, his father Pradeshi Bind (39), mother Lakshmi Devi and sister Pinki Kumari were traveling on a handcart after collecting fodder from nearby fields. An unidentified driver allegedly hit the handcart with his speeding vehicle.
Pradeshi Bind died on the spot, while Lakshmi Devi sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. Pinki Kumari escaped unhurt.
Police response
The police have registered a case against the unidentified driver under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicles Act. A probe has been initiated to trace the vehicle and the driver. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
“We are investigating the matter and efforts are on to identify the vehicle involved,” a police officer said.

The accident highlights the dangers faced by pedestrians and handcart users on rural roads, where speeding vehicles often go unchecked. Local residents have demanded better road safety measures, including speed breakers and increased police patrolling. The victim's family has appealed for help in identifying the driver.
