Internet services have returned to Sundargarh town in Rourkela. Authorities revoked prohibitory orders after the situation stabilized following a violent group clash on Thursday. Twelve people sustained injuries during the incident.
Police Make Arrests and Deploy Forces
Law enforcement officials arrested four individuals for their involvement in the violence. Police identified several other suspects and conducted multiple raids to apprehend them.
Brijesh Kumar Rai, the DIG of western range, confirmed the arrests. He stated that the situation remains absolutely under control. Rai announced the deployment of 19 police platoons to maintain law and order in the area.
Peace Meeting Leads to Normalization
A peace meeting took place on Friday to address the tensions. Subhankar Mohapatra, Sundargarh district collector, attended the meeting along with DIG Rai.
Following productive discussions, authorities decided to lift the prohibitory orders. Schools and colleges in Sundargarh town will reopen from Saturday. These educational institutions had remained closed on Friday as a precautionary measure.
Violence Erupted Over Rumors
The conflict began around 11 am on Thursday. Rumors spread regarding alleged wrongdoing by members of a particular community. An agitated group reacted violently to these rumors.
They vandalized a shop and set a pickup van on fire. The group also damaged a car and a scooter during the unrest. Tempers flared rapidly as the situation escalated.
A violent clash broke out between opposing groups. Both sides pelted stones at each other. Some individuals reportedly attacked with swords, intensifying the confrontation.
The swift police response helped contain the violence. Authorities worked diligently to restore peace and order in Sundargarh town. Normal life has resumed with the lifting of restrictions and restoration of internet services.
