Surat Police Uncover Poison Plot in Upscale Society, Arrest Woman
In a shocking incident at the upscale Shaligram Status society in Surat, the Utran police have successfully resolved a poisoning case that left two individuals in critical condition. The authorities have arrested a woman, Usha Nakrani, who allegedly laced traditional Indian sweets known as laddus with poison and strategically placed them at her neighbour's doorstep.
Motive Rooted in Suspicion Over Elopement
Police investigations reveal that Nakrani, who resided on the same floor as the victims' family, acted out of deep-seated suspicion. She believed that the family had assisted her daughter in eloping approximately one year ago. This grudge festered, culminating in a calculated act of revenge that endangered lives.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 5) Lakhdhirsinh Zala provided details on the breakthrough. "Our team conducted an exhaustive weeklong probe, examining all possible angles," he stated. "Nakrani was called in for questioning, and her behaviour immediately raised red flags. Critical evidence, including CCTV footage and corroborative statements from neighbours and the victims, unequivocally pointed to her involvement. Confronted with this irrefutable proof, she confessed to the crime."
Details of the Poisoning Incident
The alarming event unfolded on April 10. Gordhan Donda, a 70-year-old resident, discovered a packet containing two laddus wedged between the grille and the main door of his flat. Mistaking it for religious ‘prasad’ (offering), he and his 45-year-old daughter-in-law, Kiran Donda, each consumed one. Other family members refrained from eating the sweets.
Tragically, shortly after ingestion, Gordhan Donda collapsed within the society compound, while Kiran Donda's health rapidly deteriorated. Both were urgently transported to a private hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for emergency treatment. The Donda family, who are involved in the textile business, promptly alerted the police and surrendered the remaining laddu for forensic analysis.
Legal Actions and Ongoing Investigation
An First Information Report (FIR) has been officially registered against Usha Nakrani under Section 123 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to causing hurt by means of poison. This legal step underscores the severity of the allegations.
Authorities are currently awaiting the comprehensive report from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to definitively identify the exact toxic substance employed in the laddus. Based on the laboratory findings, additional charges may be levied against the accused, potentially intensifying the legal consequences she faces.
This case highlights the dangers of unresolved neighbourhood disputes escalating into criminal acts, prompting calls for community vigilance and prompt police intervention in such matters.
