A tragic accident in Mumbai's Mulund West area on Thursday evening claimed the lives of a two-year-old boy and a 45-year-old woman. The incident occurred when a 74-year-old man allegedly lost control of his SUV, mistakenly pressing the accelerator instead of the brake, and rammed into the victims who were standing near a roadside vegetable market.
Details of the Incident
The deceased were identified as Niyati Rajiv Shah, a 45-year-old woman, and the young boy, whose mother Puja Raiya was also injured in the collision. The accused, Mohan Sheshdari, was reversing his four-wheeler from his residence in Nirmal City Of Joy Housing Society at around 6:45 pm when the mishap occurred.
According to the senior police inspector of Mulund Police Station, the accused panicked upon noticing two women in front of his car buying vegetables from the roadside market opposite the society. In his panic, he pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the SUV to crash into the victims from behind. The police also stated that one of the women was carrying the boy in her arms, and both had their backs turned towards the vehicle before the collision.
Injuries and Medical Response
All three victims suffered severe injuries and were immediately rushed to Mulund General Hospital. Shah succumbed to her injuries during treatment. Raiya and her son were admitted to the ICU. The child, who suffered a serious head injury resulting in a fractured skull, was later shifted to Fortis Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The mother continues to remain under treatment. The family resides in the Mulund West region.

Locals reported that the severe impact from the collision crushed and bent the front portion of the vegetable market. An eyewitness mentioned that bloodstains from the collision are still visible on the road.
Legal Action
The accused, Mohan Sheshdari, has been booked for causing death due to negligence and rash driving. Further investigation is underway.
