Mumbai Police File FIR Against Sweeper and Two Others in Community Cat Death Case
In a distressing incident from Mira Road, Mumbai police have officially registered a case against a sweeper and two other individuals following the discovery of a community cat's carcass dumped in a housing society's trash bin. The case has sparked outrage among animal lovers and activists, highlighting concerns over cruelty towards stray animals in urban residential areas.
Allegations of Brutal Assault and Dumping
Animal activist Pallavi Patil, who filed the police complaint, provided a harrowing account of the events. According to Patil, on April 11, sweeper Shyam Singh, aged 35, allegedly beat up the cat, then picked her up by the tail and callously dumped her into the collected garbage at the N G View Housing Society. A building resident, who is also an animal lover, attempted to rescue the severely injured feline, but faced objections from the sweeper and several women residents. Tragically, by the time intervention was possible, the cat had already succumbed to her injuries.
Legal Action Under BNS and Animal Cruelty Act
Acting on Patil's complaint, the Naya Nagar police filed a First Information Report (FIR) the very next day. The three accused have been charged under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections 325 and 351(2), as well as under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. "We now have to find out who ordered the sweeper to harm the cat," stated activist Pallavi Patil, indicating that the investigation may extend beyond the immediate perpetrators to uncover any instigators behind this act of violence.
Evidence and Ongoing Investigation
Patil further revealed that during her coordination with police regarding the case, someone removed the dead cat's body from the garbage, potentially complicating evidence collection. However, she emphasized that crucial video footage exists, providing ample evidence of how the cat was assaulted. This visual record is expected to play a key role in the legal proceedings, ensuring that the perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

Expressing her dismay, Patil remarked, "It is sickening how educated people are unleashing such cruelty on animals."
