A 17-year-old girl in Pilibhit district climbed an overhead water tank in her village around 8:30 am on Tuesday after her 20-year-old boyfriend refused to marry her because she was still a minor. The incident occurred in a village under the jurisdiction of the local police station.
Standoff and Rescue
The girl repeatedly threatened to jump off the tank, prompting family members and villagers to engage her in conversation for over an hour. Police arrived at the scene along with the youth. Officers explained that marriage could legally take place only after she turned 18. The youth was then sent up to persuade her to come down, and he eventually succeeded in convincing her.
Counselling and Handover
After being rescued, the girl was taken to the police station, where women police personnel counselled her. She was later handed over to her parents, according to the local Station House Officer. The girl had recently cleared her Class X examination.
The police emphasized that the girl had been in a relationship with the youth for nearly a year. The situation was resolved without any injuries, and no legal action was taken against either party.
