A juvenile court in Odisha's Sundargarh district has ordered a 15-year-old student to be sent to a correctional home following serious allegations of rape against a 14-year-old girl, who is his classmate. The incident, which resulted in the survivor becoming pregnant, has sent shockwaves through the Rourkela community.
Details of the Alleged Assault
According to police reports, the accused, a Class X student, allegedly took advantage of the girl's circumstances to commit the crime. Both the survivor's parents are daily wage labourers who remained away from home for work. Exploiting their absence, the boy reportedly visited the girl's house and sexually assaulted her. He also allegedly threatened her to keep the crime a secret, preventing her from speaking out immediately.
Pregnancy, Termination Attempt, and Police Action
The horrific situation came to light on December 22 when the girl, realizing she was pregnant, allegedly attempted to end her own life by consuming pills to terminate the pregnancy. Her family rushed her to a hospital where doctors confirmed she was four months pregnant. The medical termination of the pregnancy occurred due to the pills she had consumed.
After a three-day hospital stay for treatment, during which her condition stabilized, the girl was discharged. Following this, on December 25, the survivor's mother filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the local police station, formally accusing the boy of rape and stating that her daughter had become pregnant as a result.
Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation
Acting on the FIR, police registered a case and detained the accused teenager on Friday. After conducting his medical examination, authorities produced him before the juvenile justice court. The court, after hearing the initial details of the case, ordered that the minor accused be sent to a correctional home.
Inspector P. Pradhan, involved in the case, confirmed that the accused and survivor study in the same school and stated that further investigation is currently underway to gather all evidence and details related to this tragic event.
