In a dramatic turn of events, a sandalwood thief was apprehended after accidentally falling into an open well while attempting to escape from vigilant farmers. The incident unfolded on Friday night at a farm located in Ainapur village, within the Chincholi taluk of Kalaburagi district, Karnataka.

Details of the Theft Attempt

The accused, identified as Baburao Laxman Rathod, a resident of Bagdal tanda in Humnabad taluk, Bidar district, along with his accomplice Premsingh, targeted a sandalwood tree on the farm. Using an axe, they began felling the valuable tree under the cover of darkness.

However, their plans were thwarted by farmer Toufiq Manjalesab, who was present in his field to safeguard his groundnut crop. Upon hearing the distinct sound of tree-chopping, Toufiq immediately alerted neighboring farmers, mobilizing a group to confront the thieves.

Chaotic Escape and Accidental Fall

As the farmers approached, Baburao and Premsingh panicked and fled the scene. In their haste to escape, Baburao tragically fell into an open well on the farm premises. Meanwhile, Premsingh managed to evade capture and remains at large.

The local villagers swiftly organized a rescue operation, pulling Baburao out of the well. Following his rescue, he was handed over to the authorities at the Chincholi police station.

Police Action and Ongoing Investigation

Police officials have confirmed that the accused, Baburao Rathod, has been sent to judicial custody. A manhunt is currently underway to locate and apprehend the fugitive accomplice, Premsingh. The case highlights the persistent issue of sandalwood theft in rural Karnataka, a crime driven by the high market value of the aromatic wood.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks criminals take and the vigilance of local farming communities in protecting their livelihoods and property.
