A clash broke out between two groups of transgender persons outside Basin Bridge police station in Chennai on Sunday, resulting in injuries to five people and damage to property. The groups pelted each other with stones, breaking window panes of the police station and damaging vehicles parked nearby.
Background of the Feud
The conflict involves a group led by Salma, 43, of Pulianthope, and another headed by Vimala and Kumudha from Moolakothalam and Yanai Kavuni. Both groups allegedly have over 100 members each and have a history of frequent conflicts. Recently, more than ten members from Salma's group switched allegiance to the rival group, escalating tensions. These defectors reportedly created disturbances at locations where Salma's group collected money.
Inciting Incident
The situation worsened when Dilsha, a member of Salma's faction, allegedly made defamatory remarks against the rival group. In retaliation, members of the rival group attacked Dilsha's house in Pulianthope on Sunday, vandalizing property including a television, an almirah, and a washing machine. They also allegedly stole a gold chain weighing about 12 sovereigns. Dilsha reported the incident to Salma, who lodged a complaint at Basin Bridge police station.
Police Intervention
Police summoned two individuals, Sumithra and Diya, for inquiry. Shortly after, members of the other group gathered outside the station demanding their release, leading to a physical altercation. Police intervened and dispersed the crowd. Based on Salma's complaint, a case was registered, and Diya (19), Sumithra (28), and Swathi (23) were arrested. A search is underway for more than five other suspects involved in the incident.
