Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has stated that the government cannot prevent people from purchasing gold, responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent remarks on gold imports. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Shivakumar criticized Modi for not addressing the reasons behind rising gold prices.
Shivakumar questions Modi on price hikes
“Modi doesn’t say why gold prices have risen. He’s asking people to reduce petrol consumption, but doesn’t say why prices are hiked. Modi has to explain why people are facing trouble,” Shivakumar said. The Congress leader accused the central government of failing to provide clarity on economic policies affecting common citizens.
Gold and petrol price concerns
The remarks come amid a surge in gold prices globally, which has impacted domestic markets. Shivakumar emphasized that buying gold is a personal choice and the government should not dictate consumer behavior. He also highlighted the burden of rising petrol prices on the public, demanding transparency from the Prime Minister.
Shivakumar’s comments reflect ongoing political tensions between the state and central governments over economic management. The Karnataka Deputy CM’s statement has drawn attention to the broader issue of inflation and its impact on households across the country.
